Under the Criminal Records Act (CRA), the National Parole Board may issue, grant, deny or revoke pardons for convictions under federal acts or regulations of Canada. A pardon allows an individual who was convicted of a criminal offence to have his or her criminal record sealed. The sentence for the original charges and the waiting periods must be completed before applying for a pardon. A person does not need to apply for a pardon if his/her criminal record consists only of absolute or conditional discharges.
